Michigan’s Retail Sportsbooks

Sports bettors in Michigan now have access to a variety of online sportsbooks. That means you can place bets from home or one the go whether you’re in the Upper or Lower Peninsula. But many still prefer the retail sportsbooks inside Michigan casinos.

Within Detroit’s three commercial casinos and across many tribal casinos located across the state, you can bet in-person at kiosks or betting windows, watch the games on huge TVs, and enjoy a full food and drink menu. And like with horse race betting, it can be more fun to win a payout as a group instead of alone at home.

Live Michigan Sports Betting Locations

In Michigan, 20 out of 26 casinos offer retail sports betting, with most housing an on-site sportsbook lounge with all the fixings. However, some only have self-service sports betting kiosks. Many also offer an online sports betting option.

What Sports Can I Bet On In Michigan?

Virtually all major domestic sports leagues should appear on the betting menus at Michigan’s live sportsbooks. Leagues including NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, NASCAR, UFC, PGA, and many others offer Michigan bettors the chance to bet on beloved US sports teams and athletes.

College sports present even more wagering opportunities. The Lawful Sports Betting Act places no restrictions on college sports betting, meaning open betting on big-time programs like the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

The Types Of Bets Taken At Sportsbooks In Michigan

Michigan’s live sportsbooks offer the entire gamut of ways to wager on sports. Moneyline, point spread, parlays, teasers, futures, and prop bets are all on the menu, with no restrictions.

Moneyline

Moneyline bets function as the most simple and time-tested way to bet on sports. This kind of bet involves picking which team will win a game, with no point spread involved. Each team pays out at different odds, with underdogs paying out at better odds than favorites.

Point Spread

Point spread bets even the odds between favorite and underdog, by adding points to an underdog’s final score or subtracting from the favorite. Point Spread betting functions as the most popular way to bet on sports in the US.

Futures

A futures bet wagers on an event that takes longer than a single game. Many futures bets focus on accolades determined at the end of a sports season. Possible futures bets could include wagers on what team will win the Super Bowl, or what player will win the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Prop Bets

A prop bets wagers on an event not directly related to what team wins or loses. A prop bet could include wagering on whether LeBron James will score more than 30 points in a given game, or which player will be the first to get on base in the World Series.

Parlays and Teasers

Parlays put multiple bets on the same ticket, paying out only if all wagers on the parlay win. Teasers function as parlays with odds and lines shifted in favor of the bettor, but payout at less favorable odds than traditional parlays.

The 3 Most Popular Sports For Sports Bettors In Michigan

NFL

The NFL reigns supreme as the most popular league among sports bettors in the US. The 16-game regular-season schedule begins in September, with 32 teams vying for the postseason.

The postseason sees 12 of those 32 teams advance, and games in the NFL playoffs present some of the most anticipated sports events in the US each year. The final two teams face off each February in the Super Bowl, which brings in more wagers than any sporting event in the world.

Michigan bettors can wager on the hometown Detroit Lions, as well as the other 31 NFL teams, with no restrictions.

NCAA Football

Michigan’s college football programs sit at the heart of the Big Ten Conference. The Big 10 enjoys a long-standing tradition as one of the top leagues in the NCAA’s top tier, the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

The FBS includes 130 programs that compete throughout the fall for a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). The top four FBS teams play each other each December and January, with the winner of the two-round tournament hoisting the CFP National Championship Trophy.

Michigan sports fans hold loyalties divided between two big-time programs – the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

NCAA Basketball

Much like college football, the Big Ten represents one of the top conferences in NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball.

The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans hold status as two of the most consistently successful programs in the Big Ten, but the conference is loaded with other basketball powerhouses. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Wisconsin Badgers, Purdue Boilermakers, Indiana Hoosiers, and Maryland Terrapins all present perennial threats to win the Big Ten championship.

The NCAA’s top men’s basketball division competes in a 68-team postseason tournament that functions as one of the most wagered-on sports events in the world. Nicknamed “March Madness”, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament creates at atmosphere like no other sporting event.

Is It Legal To Bet On Sports Outside Of Legal Sportsbooks In Michigan?

All of the sportsbooks operating from Michigan’s tribal and commercial casinos operate legally. Live sportsbooks function as on-property amenities to the casinos in which they’re located.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) regulates the state’s commercial casinos, while the National Indian Gaming Commission provides oversight for Michigan’s tribal casinos.

Online sportsbooks operate as extensions of both commercially-owned and tribally-owned retail casinos, but all online betting falls under the regulatory purview of the MGCB.

Sportsbooks not offered as official products of Michigan’s regulated casinos are operating illegally. Betting on sports through any site or broker not regulated by Michigan’s gaming oversight agencies represents an illegal activity.
